Olaria ("the app") is a budgeting journal made by Jennifer Nxumalo, trading as Olaria by Jenn, Johannesburg, South Africa. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. We have tried to write it the way we write everything in Olaria: plainly.

The short version: your financial entries belong to you. We collect only what the app needs to work; we do not sell your information; we do not show ads, and you can delete your account and all of its data yourself, from inside the app, at any time.

1. Information you give us

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your first name, your email address and a password. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and stored only in securely hashed form; we never see or store your actual password.

Financial information you enter. Olaria is a journal, so its content is what you choose to write in it: your monthly income and income sources, budgeted and actual spending across your three buckets, savings goals and logged deposits, debts and logged payments, quarterly net worth entries (assets and liabilities), your chosen top priorities, and your app preferences (currency, budget split, dark mode, reminders).

Reflections. If you use the monthly Check-in, we store what you write there, including how the month felt, your notes, and any moods or reasons you attach to emotional purchases.

We never ask for, and you should never enter, bank login details, card numbers, or identity numbers. Olaria does not connect to your bank.

2. How your information is used

Your information is used for one purpose: to make the app work for you, showing your budgets, calculating your progress, drawing your net worth over time, and generating your monthly summaries. We do not use your information for advertising; we do not sell it or rent it to anyone, and we do not use third-party advertising or analytics trackers in the app.

3. The AI spending analysis

Olaria includes an optional "Analyse my spending" feature powered by Claude, an AI assistant made by Anthropic. It runs only when you tap the button. When you do, the app sends Anthropic your first name and a summary of the selected month's figures (income, spending per bucket, targets, and days remaining) so that Claude can write your analysis. Under Anthropic's commercial API terms, this data is not used to train Anthropic's AI models. If you never tap the button, nothing is ever sent to Anthropic.

4. Where your information is stored

Your data is stored with Supabase, a cloud database provider, protected by industry-standard encryption in transit and at rest, and by row-level security rules that ensure your records can only ever be read by your own signed-in account. Supabase's servers may be located outside South Africa; by using the app you consent to your information being processed on such infrastructure.

5. Notifications

If you switch on the monthly check-in reminder, the app schedules a local notification on your device. This happens on your phone; no notification content is sent to our servers. You can switch reminders off at any time in Settings, or in your device's notification settings.

6. PDF export

The "Export this month as PDF" feature creates the document on your device. Where you send or save it from there (email, files, printing) is entirely under your control and outside the app.

7. How long we keep your information, and how you delete it

We keep your information for as long as your account exists, because your history is the point of a journal. You can delete your account at any time from Settings → "Delete my account." This permanently deletes your account and all data associated with it: budgets, reflections, goals, debts, net worth history, everything. This cannot be undone, and we cannot recover it for you afterwards.

8. Your rights

You are entitled to know what personal information we hold about you, to correct it, and to have it deleted. Almost all of your information is visible and editable directly in the app, and deletion is available in-app as described above. For anything else, including a copy of your data, or any question about this policy, email us at the address below, and we will respond within a reasonable time. We honour the rights granted under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and, where applicable, similar laws in your country.

9. Children

Olaria is a personal finance app intended for adults. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us, and we will delete it.

10. Security

We take reasonable technical measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections, encrypted storage, and per-user access rules. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password for your account.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the effective date at the top of this page and, for meaningful changes, tell you in the app. Continued use of Olaria after a change means you accept the updated policy.
